What to Do in a Dental Emergency
Dental emergencies can be painful and stressful. You need fast relief, and we’re here to help. At The Reef Dental Centre, we encourage you to call us right away for expert advice and an actionable treatment plan. We always strive to accommodate emergency cases and our dentists specialise in handling a wide range of urgent dental issues.
Whenever possible, we’ll provide guidance over the phone and arrange an emergency appointment as soon as possible typically within 24 hours. This initial visit allows us to diagnose the issue and provide immediate pain relief or urgent treatment. If additional restorative care is needed, we’ll schedule a follow up appointment.
Toothache
Tooth pain is often caused by an infection. If you have a cracked tooth, cavity, or leaking filling, bacteria can enter and infect the pulp at the center of the tooth, where all the nerves are located. This can lead to significant pain, redness, swelling, bad breath, or a persistent unpleasant taste.
Severe Toothache
If an infection has progressed significantly, a root canal may be necessary. Our experienced dentists perform this procedure with care, explaining every step to ensure you’re comfortable. In some cases, a referral to a specialist may be required.
Our approach minimises discomfort during treatment, ensuring relief once the procedure is complete. To fully restore and protect the tooth, a dental crown may be placed. At The Reef Dental Centre, tooth extraction is always our last resort, we prioritise saving your natural tooth whenever possible.
What to Do if You Knock Out a Tooth
If your tooth has been knocked out due to an injury or sports accident, re-implantation is possible but only within the first 30 minutes.
We advise rinsing the tooth with water and attempting to reinsert it yourself. If that’s not possible, store the tooth in a container with plain water or milk and come to The Reef Dental Centre immediately for emergency care.
For children who lose a baby tooth due to trauma, do not attempt reinsertion, as this can harm the developing adult tooth underneath.
